The quintessential manual for Facebook Pixel application

Its news time for the ad creators.  The Facebook ads are common phenomena, proven to be extremely beneficial for the entrepreneurs to promote their enterprise.  Now the story takes a twist as the Conversion tracking pixel, which was previously used for creating ads, is no longer applicable.  It had been replaced by the all new Facebook Pixel. Before raising the next eyebrow, let us take a dig into the world of Facebook ads to get a clear picture of the technological jargon.

Why need Conversion tracking?
Conversion tracking is not only about calculating the return on investment (ROI) using the Facebook ad platform but fulfilling the main goal of an advertiser i.e. to generate revenue from the Facebook ads. But before anything else, why on earth do we need to track conversions (thinking of the same thing!!)? Here, clear your doubts.

  • Gives the accurate amount of ROI.
  • Helps to judge the performance of A/B tests of the ad makers so the quality of the campaign can be improved.
  • Allows Facebook to optimize it’s algorithm to achieve better results.

The next section deals with the ways of installing Facebook Pixel on the website. The installation needs a list of ‘to-do’ things like:

  • Create a facebook pixel
  • Add the facebook pixel base code to all the pages of the website
  • Add the event code to some of the pages of the website
  • Confirm the pixel is implemented correctly

After the basic understanding, come the main steps for creating a Facebook Pixel. To create a Facebook pixel, these are the essentials:

  • Visit the Facebook Pixel tab in Ads Manager
  • Click on the Create a pixel
  • Enter the name for the Pixel. Another important thing which needs mentioning is that only one pixel per account is permitted, so the name should have resemblance with the business enterprise
  • Check the box to accept the terms.
  • Click Create Pixel

Now let’s take a quick sneak-peak in to the Facebook pixel code. The Facebook pixel code is made up two main elements:

  • Pixel base code( to track the activities on the website)
  • Event code (to track actions or events in the Facebook page and leverage them in advertising).

Again, following the steps would result in the installation of Pixel base code:

  • Visit the Pixels page in Ads Manager
  • Click on the Actions > View Code
  • Copy the base code and paste it between the <head> tags on each web page, or in the website template to install it on the entire website.

Facebook Pixel has given two different events of tracking conversions. Namely:

  • Standard Events – A bit complex than Custom Events. These events are only placed on certain pages with the base Pixel Code. Pages with Standard Events are the ones where the behavior of specific users can be tracked i.e. the conversions.
  • Custom Events – A conversion value is specified for each Custom Conversion. This is suggestive of the fact that when the conversion is recorded Facebook assigns specific value to the events.

The following image will help to comprehend better the difference between the two events and choose the one which suits the best.

The next part is to add the Facebook pixel base code to the pages of the website. Here are the steps:

  • Click Actions > View Pixel Code
  • Click on the code to highlight it
  • Right-click and select Copy or use Ctrl+C/ Cmd +C
  • Click Done
  • Go to the website’s HTML and paste the code.

Finally, the last step includes Adding the event code to the website’s pages. To implement that, these are the needful:

  • Visit the Facebook Pixel tab in Ads Manager
  • Click Create Conversion > Track Conversions with Standard Events
  • Copy the Event Code of the events that matters to the ad makers
  • Then go through to the website’s code and place the event code on the relevant pages. It is recommended that the event code should be placed between script tags separately.
